MYSTERY CONFESSION

The apostles strategically used the formula "Christ, Son of God" to describe Jesus. Tragically, most Christians do not know where the phrase originated or why the apostles thought it was so important to use the words together.

UPDATE - January, 2014

FROM BLOGGING TO WRITING

Thank you for stopping by! As of December 2013 and through January 2014, I have taken a break from blogging to piece together a manuscript for my third book. I sincerely request your prayers as this book is a monumental endeavor. As usual, I expect the book to be a short one. The topic this time has proven far more daunting than the first two. Please peruse the articles below as well as the archive. As you read the musings on this site, please pray my upcoming book will be far better written than the ponderings I have pieced together here as articles.
I look forward to sharing more information about the new book. If you'd like an email update when news is posted, send a note to matthew@matthewbryan.net  Otherwise, the lastest information can be found on the news page of this site. Again, please pray for me. The task is daunting. The subject matter is overwhelming - even weightier, yes, than writing about pornography and prayer. As always, I need a miracle!
    Sincerely,
    Matthew

LOGIC 101

Rene Descartes said, "I think, therefore I am." From that simple and self-evident declaration, he built his proof of the existence of God of the human soul. Building on the axioms that we exist and observe the world with some degree of accuracy, here are my 10 steps of logic from simply "I exist" to "Logic requires me to believe the Judeo-Christian Bible."

THE UNKNOWN GOSPEL OF SAUL

OVER-ACHIEVER FAITH

The prosperity faith says God will bless our bank accounts. The over-achiever faith says, "I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me." The prosperity faith makes God our ticket to wealth. The over-achiever faith says I can change my neighborhood by praying hard, witnessing hard, inviting people to church hard, and giving hard so my church's staff can work hard so the gospel can be louder, prettier, and cleverer here than at anywhere else in town.
By contrast, the New Testament records...

JESUS, SUPERSECRET KING

So this guy named Peter finally figured out that Jesus was King. When he told Jesus his discovery though, the King commanded Pete to shut up about it. Wait a minute, what?

Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." And He warned them to tell no one about Him. (Mk 8:29b-30)

He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. (Mk 1:34b)

Wait, I thought Jesus was supposed to be the King of Israel, and that the Jews were dispersed because they rejected Him. Why did Jesus try to keep His kingship a secret? Many claim He remained anonymous only because He had a hard time dealing with big crowds. As if the One who walked on water, calmed the storm, healed diseases, and defeated Satan couldn't figure out how to manage more than a few people. He could turn five loaves and two fish into an overflowing buffet for thousands, but the God-man couldn't handle a crowd? The Book says Jesus had a better reason than crowd-control for keeping His kingship secret...

THE INVISIBLE KINGDOM

Much has been made of the stealthy visit-by-night of Old Saint Nick (Nicodemas), yet we ignore the elephant in the room that evening. We tend to slice John 3:16 out of context, selling Nick's encounter as if it were a lesson from Jesus about how He was going to die on the cross for the sins of the world. He certainly died for our sins, but I submit that Jesus did not even mentioned that night His sacrifice for sins; He talked about what He almost always talked about: His Kingdom.
Jesus explained to Nick that evening three mysteries of the Kingdom, telling him first that the Kingdom was invisible...

FAITH OF THE NEW KINGDOM

After proclaiming the good news, the apostles taught new believers to practice something we today rarely teach. In a short magazine-styled resource called "The Reckoning," learn the freeing practice of the early church. You will find out how to break free from cycles of sin and how this first century practice explains many of the most mysterious passages in the New Testament.

I REPENT FROM POLITICS

In November 2012, America's two main parties offered a choice between a Mormon candidate who believes there are many gods or the most pro-abortion candidate of all time who also openly endorsed homosexual marriage. For the first time, America was such an obviously non-Christian nation that even I finally recognized it. I do not plan to stop voting, but I confess here how my life has been warped by American politics, and I admit I am convinced I must repent from at least one specific political activity.

MASS MURDER - WHY SO RARE?

May 18th, 1927 in Bath Township, MI, Andrew Kehoe set off explosives in the northern wing of Bath Consolidated School fifteen minutes after the schoolday began. In a single day, Kehoe murdered 44, wounded 58 more, then committed suicide by dynamite. Counted among the dead that day were 38 children. His full plan of destruction failed as 500 pounds of dynamite and pyrotol in the southern wing of the school failed to detonate.
Eighty five years later, America grieved nationally over a similar incident. The most appropriate question in these times might be why we see such violence so rarely. Our culture claims humans are all basically good in heart, so these events drive us to ask what could drive someone to such un-human behavior. Perhaps our good hearts are not what restrains mass murder to rarity. Perhaps instead...
